CENDARI Terms of Service

Search access to the Archival Research Guides and to the Archival Directory is open.  Please respect the reuse license applied to the data in these resources, which in most cases follows the Creative Commons CC-BY standard.  Other data may indicate either CC-0 (in particular data harvested through Europeana) or CC-BY-SA (such as the data from the Joint Distribution Committee), so please check the license information before reusing outside of the CENDARI platform. 

To create your own workspace in the Note Taking Environment, you will need to request a DARIAH password at this link and select “CENDARI” from the initial-group list. This is free of charge, but some restrictions do apply. 

Note that the data and notes in your individual workspace will be private to you, unless you choose to publish your work as an Archival Research Guide (see instructions for how to do this on our 'Get Started' page).  Should you choose to share your work, we recommend you indicate your willingness for reuse under the same CC-BY license that governs the project’s own data.

Please be reminded that if you have uploaded images, audio and video files to the Note Taking Environment and want to share them, the limitations and permissions of the content provider do apply. If you want to publish material uploaded to the CENDARI infrastructure, you are obliged to name the source and indicate the license that allows you to publish the content. If you want to publish archival material, it might be necessary to request a formal permission of the archive. The CENDARI project is not responsible for the publication of material uploaded by users.

The only aspect of your work that will be public by default are the entities you mark in your workspace.  These form an important asset for the platform’s ‘back- end’ intelligence, in creasing the effectiveness of the project search functions and enabling webs of scholarship to be viewed at a macro level.  Please remember that this in an anonymous process, which does not expose your scholarship in any substantive way.  You can however opt out of making your entities available to the system using the check box “make entities private” within the Note-Taking Environment. 

If users wish to publish their own archival descriptions within the Archival Directory, they should beforehand discuss the relevant permissions with the archive in question. Editing and publication of new archive institutional data and archival descriptions in the Archival Directory are limited by the users' rights. Please find detailed information on this topic here.
